      <image:title>Projects - Master Hands Command the Great Machinery of Production</image:title>
      <image:caption>Part of a "Video Roundtable" for Enculturation, in which five artist/scholars were selected to produce remixes of the 1936 film "Master Hands," produced by Chevrolet. Master Hands was added to Library of Congress' National Film Registry in 1999.  This remediation project had four constraints: footage from the film Master Hands needed to be used; the final film needed to be no longer than ten minutes; no accompanying text could be provided with the film; none of the five participants could see each other's films until published.  Five additional scholars were selected to offer commentary/response to the five films.  All can be seen here.  </image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Address Is Approximate</image:title>
      <image:caption>Address Is Approximate (1219 Maple Street; 2305 Taylor Street; Rosewood &amp; Edisto), 2012 More instructive in making sense of Google Street View than the metaphor of inside/outside is the one of depth and surface. What appears on the screen in the use of Street View iconically represents what is not, perhaps, literally deep beneath it. But Street View is an index; in its use, not only are the sites we try to find indexically represented by the photos taken at the actual places, but even more importantly, the whole coded structure that makes Street View functional is indexed, but not iconically, in its very interactivity. Appropriating three addresses from Google Street View, I have blended them together into the image of an impossible site, an icon of an unnatural location, which approximates no real space, and addresses no particular user, but is itself stitched from the indices of real spaces. This composite image is repeated here four times. In each instance, “buried” in the image’s code is a natural language text, which is indexed on the “surface” of the image in subtle distortions in the picture. The contents of some of the texts, as is likely clear, are in tension with what they are doing here. They are, in a sense, performing the tension inherent in interactive indexical images.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - 43'33</image:title>
      <image:caption>The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra playing Cage's 4'33 very slowly. 43'33 is a reconsideration of John Cage's 4'33. In that piece, Cage encouraged us to listen to the materiality of and ambient sounds that fill a concert hall, and which are, in the context of music, understood typically as silence. By taking a video of a performance of that piece, by the BBC Philharmonic, and slowing it down to 43 minutes and 33 seconds, I reveal, in a different way, the immanent sounds and tones packed in a video recording of a moment, elements (like the ambient silence of a concert hall) that are typically understood as "not there."  For Cage, the phenomenon of sound was a matter, it seems, of human attention to materialities usually ignored. 43'33 shows a materiality of sound recorded, stored, transmitted, and temporalized outside the normal scale of human attention. 43'33 is concert music for robots.</image:caption>
